It’s spring here and the rabbits have decided they like all the tender young plants in my garden more than they like grass. This is clearly unacceptable and M easures M ust B e T aken.
I really can’t be bothered with all the rigmarole of getting a firearms license* just to pot a few bunnies round the garden or finish them off in a live trap, and also while we’re semi-rural we have neighbors and road within a couple of hundred yards, and even .22 slugs will do some damage at that range. So a cheap and cheerful airgun it is.
Gamo Black Bear, 0.177 cal, 1000fps, break action. Somewhere near the bottom of their range, but uses the barrel and mechanism of a previous-generation higher-end one, so should be reasonably accurate and robust enough for the few dozen rounds a year it’ll fire. Also came with a scope, which I haven’t fitted yet: will see how I go over open sights first. On which subject, fibre optic sights are a new innovation since last time I paid any serious attention to guns - wow, big improvement on a dab of white paint!
*Not an attempt to open a second amendment debate, just a fact of life here.

My parent s’ had one this summer who decided that their door mat was extremely tasty:
No shooting them at their place, though their dog caught and killed a baby bunny.

Our cats take baby ones all the time - Jai had one this morn ing, in fact (and he’s now lying around looking fat and pleased with himself ). B ut they won’t take on the mature ones, and they don’t seem to get enough babies to drop the population.

Air rifles are great for hunting small game.

Gamo makes a pretty nice product. My wife’s uncle has one very similar to the one you have pictured and I love shooting it when we go over there.

F ib er optic sights have been around for a while, but I think in the past few years they’ve gotten a lot cheaper and that translates to be ing more common . There are also fiber- tritium sights that try to be a little better than either one alone, which are still expensive but there are some interesting approaches .

I bought a .22 caliber Gamo air rifle. I had a chance to shoot it back to back with a .177. It was surprising how much quieter the larger caliber is. The range is about the same, but it shoots a lot slower.

Guy at the a irgun shop recommended .22 for stopping power at shorter distances and .177 for accuracy at longer distances. Which round here means .177 if you’re mostly after bunnies or targets, and .22 if your p roblem is possums .
I was actually pleasantly surprised how quiet t he .177 is. Though this model has an integral muzzle brake, which helps, no doubt .

Even an air rifle like that needs a firearms licence on this side of the Tasman.
I once had a Dana 0.17 that I was very happy with. It did have a scope on it but the air spring played havoc with it so I went back to an open sight. Was better and then I scored a rin g sight for it which was the best...

Over here you only need a license for an air rifle if it’s pre-charged pn eumatic type (i.e. rapid fire capable) .

My brothers black lab took care of the bunnies here, she came over once, found den by the garage and scarf fed up a few babies.
My cat and seriously cut down the chipmunk population, I see her with at least 1 a week. Nice to know I won’t have to worry about any rodents in my garage.

pops has a slingshot to take whacks at the squirrels and blue jays - he uses gobstoppers as ammo.

I suspect that’s inherent to the .22 because a similar charge results in a much lower muzzle velocity. No sonic boom = much quieter rifle.
Even with .177, I achieved similar results by just switching ammo from the standard 4.5-5 grain rounds to the much larger 10 grain. I would guess the velocity dropped from 1100 down to about 800 or so, and the noise is greatly reduced.

The secret is to leave the corpse where you whacked it for a day or so. We have a straight up rabbit infestation in my neighborhood, but they have steered clear of my yard after I smoked a few with my Gamo .177 rifle. You just gotta leave the body out there long enough to scent the ground with death, lol... 12 hours is enough.
